2018 Clos Rougeard Le Bourg Saumur-Champigny

The Clos Rougeard estate is located in Chacé within the Saumur-Champigny appellation and comprises multiple vineyard parcels—totaling 11 hectares, with some plots as small as 0.5 hectare. The Le Bourg vineyard, situated in the centre of Chacé, is planted with very old vines (some over a hundred years old) on a terroir defined by predominantly limestone soils accompanied by deep clay subsoil. In the winemaking process, the wine is matured for 18 to 24 months in new oak barriques.

Farming

Organic and biodynamic viticulture is employed, with old vines that have never been exposed to chemical products. Hand-harvesting and rigorous vine tending result in extremely low yields (~25 hl/ha).

Fermentation

Minimal intervention vinification begins with primary fermentation in cement vats using native yeasts and daily punch-downs, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrels.

Aging

Aged 18 to 24 months in new oak barrels (barriques de chêne neuf), then matured over several years in deep tuffeau cellars and traditional tuffeau-carved tunnels; post-bottling rest is conducted without fining or filtration.
