2018 Clos Rougeard Les Poyeux Saumur-Champigny

This Cabernet Franc is produced in the Loire region of France from Saumur/Saumur-Champigny vineyards. The estate’s holdings include the sandy soils of Les Poyeux, where vines aged between 40 and 70 years are cultivated, as well as a nearly 2‐hectare plot on a gentle slope with a clay and limestone base intermingled with windblown sands. In addition, select Cabernet Francs are sourced from vineyards in Chacé adjacent to the Clos Rougeard cellars, planted on decomposed sandstone over tuffeau subsoils. Vinification techniques include fermentation in concrete vessels utilizing native yeasts and aging in 1‐year-old barrels for 18–24 months, with some lots processed in second-pass barrels previously used for Le Bourg production. The limited production underscores the significance of the ancient vines and distinctive terroir.

Farming

Certified Organic viticulture implementing manual pruning and low yields, with no modern chemical fertilizers or herbicides; vineyards have been organically managed for eight generations.

Harvest

Hand-harvested (maximum 6 bunches per vine) with double sorting and de-stemming; only free-run juice is extracted.

Fermentation

Primary fermentation occurs in concrete using native yeasts with minimal SO₂, gentle pumping over, and a maceration period of 21–28 days; malolactic fermentation is conducted in barrel.

Aging

Vinification and aging continue in second-pass barrels and in 1-year-old barrels for 18–24 months—with a small percentage of new oak for Les Poyeux and varied oak treatments for different cuvées—followed by additional bottle aging.
