2018 Marie Courtin Effloresence Blanc de Noir

Marie Courtin, founded in 2005, produces its flagship Champagne, Efflorescence, exclusively from 100% Pinot Noir sourced from single-vineyard parcels in the Aube region (including Polisot and Côtes de Bar). The vineyards, situated at the bottom of south-facing slopes, benefit from low yields on Kimmeridgian, clay, limestone, and heavier clay‐based soils, and are maintained through biodynamic practices and massale selection, with vine ages ranging from 35–40 to over 50 years. The wine undergoes barrel fermentation in used barriques with natural yeasts, followed by one year in demi-muid and over three years sur lie (on the lees) before disgorgement, with production limited to roughly 250 cases annually and using low to zero dosage techniques.

Farming

Biodynamic and Organic farming practices are employed, with biodynamic techniques applied to grapes grown on 40-year-old vines planted in clay and limestone soils and harvested from the bottom of a hill.

Harvest

Hand-harvested grapes from a single vineyard and single vintage, including 40-year-old Pinot Noir vines, using 100% Pinot Noir.

Fermentation

Native and wild (massale-selected) fermentations are conducted using natural and native yeasts in stainless steel, used barriques, or directly in bottle. Secondary fermentation in bottle is employed for Extra-Brut style cuvées, ensuring freshness and energy.

Aging

Initial aging occurs in demi-muid for one year, followed by extended lees contact—either sur lie or sur latte—for 24 months to 3+ years before disgorgement. Disgorgement is executed in a non-dosé style, with overall low to zero dosage added at bottling.
