2018 Paolo Bea Pagliaro Montefalco Sagrantino Secco
The Bea family's iconic Pagliaro is 100% Sagrantino, the fabled native grape of Montefalco, Italy, sourced from the Pagliaro vineyard at 1,300 feet altitude in the DOCG-designated region. The name 'Sagrantino' likely derives from the Latin 'sagra', meaning feast. Following traditional methods, the wine undergoes extended cuvaison of 40-50 days, then ages one year in stainless steel, two years in large Slavonian oak barrels, and an additional year in bottle before release. The wine is unfiltered, with annual production of 15,000 to 20,000 bottles. For decades, the Bea family has worked to elevate the profile of Umbrian wine and the Sagrantino grape in particular.
