2019 Domaine de L'Agramante Ciaula

Ciaula is a Côtes-du-Rhône rouge produced by Domaine de l’Agramante in the Southern Rhône, named for the Sicilian word for “Crow” and inspired by a Pirandello narrative in which a miner first beholds the beauty of the moon. The wine is crafted from old vine Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, and Counoise (with some vintages incorporating Mourvèdre), reflecting the region’s traditional grape varieties. In the winemaking process, extended maceration techniques are applied to older vine Grenache to extract additional phenolic compounds and build structure, while still preserving the varietal expression and character of the terroir.

Farming

Organically cultivated vines in Sabran on 2 ha of sandy soils planted in the 1970s and 80s. The vineyard is managed without pesticides or herbicides, using green manures. Vines are goblet trained with disbudding and leaf thinning. Harvest is carried out entirely manually with strict sorting.

Harvest

Grapes are blended by plot in vats, 100% de‐stemmed and lightly crushed, reflecting traditional viticulture practices and artisanal savoir-faire.

Fermentation

Temperature‐controlled fermentation employs an extended, 12‐day maceration with daily pumping-over; in some cases, fermentation is conducted in stainless steel vessels.

Aging

One approach utilizes 10 months of maturation in vats with clarification by sedimentation and no filtration, while an alternative method involves stainless steel aging for 8 months followed by bottling unfined and unfiltered.
