2020 La Stoppa VDT Bianco Ageno

La Stoppa’s Ageno is an orange wine produced exclusively on its historic estate in Piacenza, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. The vineyards are planted with mixed varietals—primarily 90% Malvasia di Candia complemented by 10% Ortrugo and/or Trebbiano Toscano—in co-planted blocks averaging 30 years in age, grown on hot, low-yielding land. The grapes are hand-harvested, co-destemmed, and, after being picked together, undergo skin maceration that typically lasts between one and four months in stainless steel tanks using native yeasts, with minimal to no sulfur added. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, and the wine is subsequently aged in a combination of used French oak barriques, Slavonian oak botti, and stainless steel, followed by a period of at least two years in bottle before release.

Geography

Country: Italy

Farming

Organic vineyard management practiced since the early 1990’s and certified in 2008, with minimal intervention and manual work. Vines grow autonomously without synthetic fertilizers or weed killers, receiving copper treatments and minimal to no sulphur application.

Harvest

Grapes from co-planted, 30‑year‑old vines are hand‑harvested (or co‑harvested) and destemmed.

Fermentation

The must undergoes extended skin maceration—ranging from approximately 1 month up to 4 months with continuous cap management and mash fermentation techniques typical of orange wine production—in steel tanks using native yeasts. Natural malolactic fermentation follows, with some processes omitting added sulfur.

Aging

Maturation occurs for about 1 year split between stainless steel, used French oak, and Slavonian oak botti, then continues with 2 years in bottle, sometimes without filtration or added sulfur.
