2021 La Porte Saint Jean Saumur-Champigny
La Porte Saint Jean’s flagship Saumur Champigny is produced from 100% Cabernet Franc grown in the Loire Valley’s Saumur-Champigny appellation on vineyards with soils comprising calcareous elements—sand, silt, clay—and a limestone subsoil. The grapes, sourced from vines aged between 40 and 70 years (including the Les Cormiers vineyard), are hand‑harvested and initially fermented in fiberglass tanks. The wine is then aged for 18 months in old Bordeaux barrels—including those from Clos Rougeard and Château Haut-Brion—often combining predominantly free-run juice with a touch of press wine to add structure. Crafted under the direction of winemaker Sylvain Dittiere (nicknamed “TonTon”), this wine reflects a detailed expression of its terroir and traditional production techniques.
