2022 Bernabeleva Navaherreros

Bernabeleva’s 2022 Camino de Navaherreros is produced from vineyards located just outside Madrid—in the hills of San Martín de Valdeiglesias and the surrounding mountainous regions northwest of the city. The estate’s vineyards benefit from high-altitude conditions and thin, infertile sandy soils derived from decomposed granite, a terroir that reflects the area’s ancient Celtic roots. Predominantly planted with Garnacha (Grenache) from some vineyards dating back 80 years, the wine also incorporates approximately 10% Tempranillo, with other varietals such as Albillo and Moscatel de Grano Menudo vinified separately. The grapes are hand harvested at an early stage in a warm summer to help maintain moderate alcohol levels. Fermentation and aging take place in large neutral wood vessels, and detailed production metrics include an alcohol content of 14%, a pH of 3.37, and 5.31 grams per liter of acidity—all indicative of the estate’s precise, minimally interventionist winemaking approach.

Farming

Respectful agriculture is practiced through certified organic and biodynamic viticulture, with hand harvesting from organically managed vineyards. Grapes are sourced from older vineyards (50–90 years) on granite soils in transition to organic practices.

Harvest

Grapes are harvested early during a warm summer to moderate alcohol levels.

Fermentation

Approximately 50–80% stem inclusion is employed—with some batches including whole clusters—and pressing is applied to the remaining fruit. Maceration periods range from 25 days (or roughly four weeks) up to 65 days, with minimal intervention and wild fermentation conducted in stainless steel, concrete, and large wooden vats.

Aging

The wine undergoes aging in various vessels, including 12 months in assorted wood barrels (such as 500+-liter oak barrels and 3,200-liter oak vats), as well as aging for 6 months in large upright old wooden vats and stainless steel, or 1 year in used barrels.
