2023 Markus Altenburger Blaufrankisch Vom Kalk

The Blaufränkisch vom Kalk is a BIO-certified, 100% Blaufränkisch wine produced from grapes sourced from seven distinct plots within the Leithaberg DAC. The vineyards feature vines of varying ages established on limestone-rich (vom Kalk) and chalky loam soils, reflecting the unique terroir of the region. The winemaking process includes full destemming without crushing, native yeast fermentation conducted in stainless steel tanks, and subsequent aging on lees for 18 months in large casks. These technical and viticultural details underscore the wine’s clear expression of its vineyard origins and site-specific character.

Farming

Organic vineyards managed with biodynamic practices (currently in third year of organic conversion) and dry-farmed using traditional methods including compost application and cover crops. Certified Organic, Low-Intervention/Natural Wine, Vegan.

Harvest

Grapes are hand‐harvested and promptly brought to the cellar for selection and destemming, with gentle crushing applied in some cases while preserving whole berries for maceration.

Fermentation

Following a 7‐day maceration period, spontaneous fermentations take place using native yeasts in a combination of stainless steel and wooden fermenters under controlled temperatures, characterized by a minimal intervention approach.

Aging

Fermentation products are aged in large oak barrels—ranging from used 2000 L barrels to 2400 L double-piece and other old wood casks—for periods spanning from several months to 18 months, with extended lees contact in some instances; bottling is executed unfined and unfiltered with minimal added sulfites.
