2023 Pfister Berg Riesling

This bone-dry Alsatian Riesling comes from four small plots on hard limestone soils (Muschelkalk) in the cool, windy northern part of Alsace. The clay-limestone composition provides body while the calcareous bedrock contributes finesse, focus, and length. The wine is aged on fine lees for 18 months in steel tanks, allowing it to soften and integrate. An elegant mid-weight expression with excellent concentration and beautifully integrated acidity, it demonstrates the pure, refreshing style characteristic of the region's terroir. Produced by one of Alsace's best young winemakers, this wine shows significant aging potential.

No-till regimen adopted. Methods adapted by parcel, with some parcels mowed and mulched while others are sown with plant material that is pushed over and left flat between rows. HVE certified.

Harvest

Hand harvested on October 5-6, 2023; six plots of Riesling totaling 3.18 acres are vinified in separate tanks from four different plots of clay and Triassic limestone.

Fermentation

Vinified in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve fruit's aromatic purity and terroir expression; indigenous yeast is preferred, though non-aromatic cultured yeasts may be used in problematic years; fermented dry.

Aging

Aged on fine lees for 18 months in steel tanks with extended élevage, aging nearly a year before bottling to bring roundness and complexity while maintaining characteristic freshness; no oak used; bottled with minimal sulfur addition.
