2023 Philippe Gilbert Menetou-Salon Rouge
Philippe's flagship Menetou-Salon Rouge is produced from Pinot Noir, the only red varietal permitted in the appellation. The twenty-seven hectare domaine is certified organic and uses biodynamic viticulture, with vineyards scattered throughout Menetou-Salon, Vignoux, Parassy, and Morogues. The soil is a classic mix of clay and limestone sitting on the Kimmeridgian basin that extends from Menetou through Sancerre and Pouilly-sur-Loire to Chablis and Champagne. The wine offers mesmerizing purity of fruit, with a silken, vibrant texture complementing a sense of mouthwatering sappiness. The micro-climate features warm days and cool nights, allowing proper sugar development while maintaining excellent acid balance. The chalky thrust of the terroir asserts itself strongly, even in vintages marked by heat.
